How to search better in google?

Some basic facts

  • Every word matters. Generally, all the words you put in the query will be used.
  • Search is always case insensitive. A search for new york times ] is the same as a search for New York Times ].
  • Generally, punctuation is ignored, including @#$%^&*()=+[]\ and other special characters.
Better Searching

Phrase search ("")
By putting double quotes around a set of words, you are telling Google to consider the exact words in that exact order without any change. Google already uses the order and the fact that the words are together as a very strong signal and will stray from it only for a good reason, so quotes are usually unnecessary. By insisting on phrase search you might be missing good results accidentally. For example, a search for"Alexander Bell" ] (with quotes) will miss the pages that refer to Alexander G.
Bell.

Search within a specific website (site:)
Google allows you to specify that your search results must come from a given website. For example, the query iraq site:nytimes.com ] will return pages about Iraq but only from nytimes.com. The simpler queries iraq nytimes.com ] oriraq New York Times ] will usually be just as good, though they might return results from other sites that mention the New York Times. You can also specify a whole class of sites, for exampleiraq site:.gov ] will return results only from a .gov domain and iraq site:.iq ] will return results only from Iraqi sites.

Terms you want to exclude (-)
Attaching a minus sign immediately before a word indicates that you do not want pages that contain this word to appear in your results. The minus sign should appear immediately before the word and should be preceded with a space. For example, in the queryanti-virus software ], the minus sign is used as a hyphen and will not be interpreted as an exclusion symbol; whereas the queryanti-virus -software ] will search for the words 'anti-virus' but exclude references to software. You can exclude as many words as you want by using the - sign in front of all of them, for examplejaguar -cars -football -os ]. The - sign can be used to exclude more than just words. For example, place a hyphen before the 'site:' operator (without a space) to exclude a specific site from your search results.

Fill in the blanks (*)
The *, or wildcard, is a little-known feature that can be very powerful. If you include * within a query, it tells Google to try to treat the star as a placeholder for any unknown term(s) and then find the best matches. For example, the search Google * ] will give you results about many of Google's products (go to next page and next page -- we have many products). The queryObama voted * on the * bill ] will give you stories about different votes on different bills. Note that the * operator works only on whole words, not parts of words.

Search exactly as is (+)
Google employs synonyms automatically, so that it finds pages that mention, for example, childcare for the querychild care ] (with a space), or California history for the query ca history ]. But sometimes Google helps out a little too much and gives you a synonym when you don't really want it. By attaching a +immediately before a word (remember, don't add a space after the +), you are telling Google to match that word precisely as you typed it. Putting double quotes around a single word will do the same thing.

The OR operator
Google's default behavior is to consider all the words in a search. If you want to specifically allow either one of several words, you can use the OR operator (note that you have to type 'OR' in ALL CAPS). For example,San Francisco Giants 2004 OR 2005 ] will give you results about either one of these years, whereas San Francisco Giants 2004 2005 ](without the OR) will show pages that include both years on the same page. The symbol | can be substituted for OR. (The AND operator, by the way, is the default, so it is not needed.)

The Not operator
For example if there is a search with two meaning like th one in the image "Emperor Penguin longevity Not Book" one meaning is related to penguuin and other is to book.In that case Not operator will help in excluding searches related to books

Adobe Flash Hit By Another Zero-Day Bug

Adobe this week warned of a critical bug in Flash Player 10.2 that could causes crashes and potentially allow a hacker to take control of an affected system.
The company said Monday that it is in process of finalizing a schedule for delivering updates to affected versions. At this point, it exists in Flash Player 10.2.153.1 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, Adobe Flash Player 10.2.156.12 and earlier versions for Android, and the Authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat X (10.0.2) and earlier 10.x and 9.x versions for Windows and Mac.
"There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in targeted attacks via a Flash (.swf) file embedded in a Microsoft Word (.doc) file delivered as an email attachment, targeting the Windows platform," Adobe said in its advisory.
Adobe said it was not aware of PDF-related attacks in Reader or Acrobat, and Adobe Reader X Protected Mode mitigations would prevent that type of exploit from happening. As a result, the bug for Adobe Reader X for Windows will be addressed in the next quarterly update for Adobe Reader on June 14.
As PCMag's Larry Seltzer points out, this type of vulernability might sound familiar. It's quite similar toanother Flash zero-day from several weeks ago that was embedded in an Excel file and used to attack RSA. Brian Krebs also noted that only one of the 42 anti-malware engines on VirusTotal could detect this attack.

Bing-Powered Searches Hit 30 Percent in March

Bing is expanding its reach as a search engine, according to new data from Experian Hitwise. In March, Bing powered nearly a third (30.01 percent) of U.S. searches.
The amount of Bing-powered searches has been steadily increasing. In February, they accounted for 28.48 percent of traffic, meaning the March figures are a 5 percent increase.
However, Google is still top dog as far as search engines go. In captured 64.42 percent of the market, a 3 percent decrease from the previous month. But other sources are gaining on Google. Yahoo nabbed the third spot with 15.69 percent of searches, a 5 percent month-over-month increase, and Bing alone saw a 6 percent increase from February's figures with 14.32 percent of the space. While Hitwise also tracks 69 additional search engines, they only comprised 5.58 percent of U.S. searches in March.
The term Bing-powered search might be a bit confusing. In July 2009, Microsoft signed a 10-year dealwith Yahoo that allows Bing to power Yahoo's search site and Yahoo to handle advertising. Bing has been powering Yahoo search in the U.S. and Canada since August 2010.
Hitwise also monitors search success rates, meaning searches that actually lead you to a Web site. Both the Yahoo and Bing sites had nearly the same rate of success at 81.4 percent and 80.32 percent respectively. Google had a lower success rate of 65.91 percent.
Most searches (24.40 percent) are just one word long, according to Hitwise. In fact, longer searches (those that are five to eight words in length) slipped 3 percent from February to March, while shorter queries (one to four words long) were up 1 percent.

AMD Has First Certified USB 3.0 Chipsets

The USB 3.0 specification took an important step towards wider implementation with the certification of the first SuperSpeed USB 3.0 chipsets, the A75 and A70M FCH chipsets from Advanced Micro Devices, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced Tuesday.
"The ramp of the SuperSpeed USB ecosystem has been unprecedented, and the first certified SuperSpeed USB chipsets from AMD are a momentous step in the industry," USB-IF president Jeff Ravencraft said in a statement.
"SuperSpeed USB integration into the chipsets is a strong incentive for manufacturers to bring an even broader range of SuperSpeed USB solutions to the market."
The USB specification for establishing communication between peripheral devices like flash drives and a PC, smartphone or other host controller has largely replaced older interfaces like serial and parallel ports.
The USB 3.0 specification was completed in November 2008 and the first consumer USB 3.0 products were released by Buffalo Technology a year later. The first certified USB 3.0 products, including motherboards from ASUS and Gigabyte, were announced at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
A key new feature in the USB 3.0 specification is the "SuperSpeed" bus, which adds a fourth transfer mode to enable much faster transfers of data from peripheral devices to host controllers.
"The integration of SuperSpeed USB into AMD's Fusion Controller Hubs demonstrates AMD's commitment to providing the industry's latest, most innovative connectivity technologies," said Chris Cloran, corporate vice-president and general manager of AMD's Client Group.
"AMD Fusion Controller Hubs will provide competitive performance while consuming low power with active USB 3.0 traffic for high definition video and fast connectivity with the latest SuperSpeed USB devices."
AMD rival Intel has its own proprietary I/0 technology called Thunderbolt.
